Flooding – Know the Risks

Note: March 12 through 18 is Flood and Wildfire Safety Week in Colorado. This is the third article in a series on safety and preparedness. See Monday’s article here.

Today’s topic during this Flood Safety and Wildfire Awareness Week is flooding which develops in the time frame of longer than 6 hours to several days.

There have been some notable floods across the Centennial State:

In early June of 1921, a flood along the Arkansas River devastated the City of Pueblo. Scores of drownings occurred.

State Basketball was on the minds of many folk last week-end. Our Lady Eagles played three days in the State meet. Our neighbors, the Kit Carson Girls are the State Champions as well as the Holly boys are the Champions. The Kit Carson Boys team won over Fleming Saturday for third place.

The Lamar girls are also State Champions. They are coached by Erik Melgosa an Eads graduate.

Flooding can be a major problem in Colorado

In September 2013, heavy rain fell over a large area of the foothills south to the Pikes Peak Region, resulting in flash flooding. Much of the water that fell across northeast Colorado eventually ended up in the South Platte River, with major river flooding occurring from Greeley to the state line.

Colorado Flood Safety and Preparedness Tips

Did you know that 267 Colorado cities and towns, and all of Colorado’s 64 counties; have been identified as being at risk for flooding? Colorado’s landscape and ever-changing weather not only creates a beautiful state, but it also creates potentially powerful flood hazard.

Floods can be one of the most damaging natural disasters. The extensive flooding along the Front Range in September 2013 showed just how real the flood threat is in Colorado. No matter where you live, work or play in the mountains, big cities, small towns or out on the plains, you can be impacted by a flood.
