Thinking of Spring Cleaning? Protect Yourself from Hantavirus

With the onset of warmer weather, annual spring cleaning often includes clearing out sheds, out buildings, recreational vehicles and other areas used by rodents as winter shelter – and that brings the potential for exposure to hantavirus. Even an occupied home can potentially be contaminated with droppings and urine carrying Hantavirus.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a serious, potentially fatal, respiratory illness carried by deer mice throughout the state. Deer mice can be particularly abundant in rural areas such as Kiowa County.

Burlington Man Guilty of Murder

Following a trial spanning nearly two weeks, a jury has found Dylan Eason guilty of Murder in the First Degree in the killing of Dr. Cynthia Campbell-Eason between April 28 and 29, 2016 at a home in Burlington.

Eason had been arrested and charged after an extensive investigation conducted by the Burlington Police Department, Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and the Office of the District Attorney for the 13th Judicial District.

Ag Census Coming – Still Time to Register

Farmers and ranchers across the nation soon can represent agriculture in their communities and industry by taking part in the 2017 Census of Agriculture.

The census is conducted every five years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), and will be mailed at the end of this year. It is a complete count of all U.S. farms, ranches, and those who operate them.

More EPA Payments for Gold King Mine Spill

Colorado Senator Cory Gardner announced the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is awarding a total of $54,275.40 to Colorado entities “for payroll, fringe, travel and indirect costs” associated with the Gold King Mine spill. According to the EPA, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe will receive $812.49, the city of Durango will receive $1,072.63, the San Juan Basin Health Department will receive $13,611.22, and La Plata County will receive $38,779.06.
