Showers will continue Friday following a day of intense storms that brought heavy rain, severe straight-line winds that reached 80 miles per hour, and even a few tornadoes to the eastern plains. Thursday’s storms were strong enough to cause Highway 287 to close between Eads and Kit Carson due to crashes, and at least one home received significant damage. Highway 40 in Cheyenne County also closed for a time to allow for debris removal.
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne will visit Eads and travel to Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site to see the future site of a National Park Service (NPS) facility and recognize the transfer of state-owned lands to the historic site.

[Update 2] - The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch shortly after 12:00 p.m. that will be in effect until 7:00 p.m. for eastern Colorado counties, including Kiowa County.
[Updated] An upper closed low pressure system over Arizona moving into Colorado is expected to produce active weather over the eastern plains Thursday.
The Kiowa County Hospital District and County Board met in regular session on April 26, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bank Meeting Room.
