The Bent’s Old Fort and Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Sites have recently become the first locations in Colorado to attain recognition as pilot Firewise Education Sites. A Firewise Education Site promotes wildfire preparedness and illustrates Firewise principles in action for the educational benefit of visitors, including teaching people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encouraging communities to work together to take action to prevent losses.

Fire danger will be elevated over the weekend as unseasonably warm temperatures return to Kiowa County and all of southeast Colorado. Rain and snow are not expected over the coming days.

The Kiowa County Hospital District and County Board met in regular session on January 24, 2017 at 6:33 p.m. at the Bank Meeting Room.
District Board members present were: Robert Woods, Mary Eikner, Sylvia Shields, Priscilla Waggoner and Cathryn Anderson.
County Board members present were: Kim Harris, Craig Kerfoot, John Negley and Dennis Pearson. Absent: Lori Shalberg (called)
Others present: Tristen Sheridan, Shannon Dixon, Char Korrell, Kevin Siefkas and Cindy McLoud.
The meeting was called to order by Mary Eikner, Chairman of the Board.

Each month, the Colorado Department of Agriculture features a different product to highlight the variety and quality of products grown, raised or processed in the state. Colorado is the number one millet producing state in the nation, with 260,000 acres producing more than 8 million bushels each year. What’s Millet? Small nonfarm businesses in 22 Colorado counties and neighboring Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Wyoming counties are now eligible to apply for low‑interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the drought in the following primary counties beginning Nov. 15, 2016, announced Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center - West.
