The Colorado Department of Transportation announced that one of its employees, Nolan Olson, has died after being struck by a vehicle. Olson was working February 2 filling potholes on US Highway 160 in Pagosa Springs when he was hit and received severe injuries. He was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, where he died Sunday from his injuries.
Colorado received the highest grade in a report released this week by the Center for American Progress that examined election security.
The organization examined seven factors, including voting machine certification requirements and post-election audits, in grading all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Colorado received a B, the highest grade given, and was singled out for being the first state to conduct mandatory risk-limiting post-election audits, in 2017.
Standardized testing has drawn its share of criticism from teachers, students and parents. One of the most common complaints is the stress that all three groups feel – from preparation through performance.
From a young age, students take these timed tests that measure academic competency and, ultimately, whether they’re college material. Countless articles on standardized testing in the U.S. point out the pressure on students to score well; that teachers are often evaluated by how their students fare on the tests; and that parents get anxiety hoping their children score high.

November 3. 1943-February 2, 2018
Ronald Eugene Homan was born on November 3, 1943, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado at the old hospital, to Leroy Homan and Ruth Kathryn Gross Homan. He was middle child of three boys - Junior, Ronnie, and Dean. They lived just south of the Lutheran Church.
After stabilizing briefly, parts of Colorado impacted by severe drought increased over the past week, while moderate drought retreated in some areas and advanced in others. A storm settling across the state Saturday is unlikely to prompt many changes for the coming week.
“This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12. I wear a ring with that inscription. The next verse in 13 tells us, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down his life for his friends.” This reminds me of what my uncle, Hank Pollreis, wrote to my mother, Ida, “I am going to fight for you and your children.” He did in World War II when he died as a paratrooper in New Guinea.
