Sheriff’s Office: Beware of IRS Scam Calls

Safe and Prepared - Helpful Tips

The Kiowa County Sheriff's Office has been alerted by a county resident about a phone call where the caller purported to be from the IRS in order to obtain personal information.

The IRS does not call - or email - people asking for personally identifying information, including financial information. The agency sends notification via the United States Postal Services, and also responds to calls from taxpayers. Anyone receiving such a call should simply hang up.

All Colorado Driver License Offices to Close at 3 p.m. February 17

All state and county Colorado driver license offices will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 17, for a technology upgrade. This closure does not affect county title and registration offices, but does impact the driver license services offered in the following county motor vehicle offices: Arapahoe, Baca, Cheyenne, Douglas, El Paso, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Lake, Lincoln, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma.

Pueblo Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegally Possessing Firearms

Daniel Anthony Garcia, 28, of Pueblo, Colorado, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Christine M. Arguello to serve 37 months in federal prison for felon in possession of a firearm, Acting U.S. Attorney Bob Troyer and ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge Ron Humphries announced. Following his prison sentence, Judge Arguello ordered the defendant to serve three years on supervised release. The defendant, in custody since his arrest January 25, 2016, was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Garcia pled guilty to the charge October 13, 2016.

Lamar Community College Provides Free Tax Filing Services

This tax season, Lamar Community College is partnering with the Denver-based Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program.  Beginning Tuesday, February 14, IRS-certified LCC students will be available for six days in February to prepare and e-file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $54,000 a year.

The conference affords residents across Colorado a better understanding of the federal legislative process by giving them the opportunity to interact with members of Congress, the President's cabinet, and other relevant leaders in Washington, D.C.
