The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has approved the reconstruction of Interstate 70 through central Denver, concluding a 14-year unprecedented outreach and community engagement process.

Free Legal Self-Help Clinics Set for Prowers, Otero Counties

Prowers and Otero Counties will be hosting free legal self-help clinics via computer link for people without attorneys. Volunteer attorneys provide one-on-one assistance.

Otero County's clinics are offered on the second Wednesday of the month and is hosted by the Woodruff Memorial Library, located at 522 Colorado Avenue in La Junta. The next clinic is scheduled for February 8. Call 719-384-4612 to sign up for an appointment, which is be scheduled between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

Secretary Williams Releases Business Indicators Report

New business filings exhibited "unrelenting growth" in the final quarter of 2016, while the energy sector has reached bottom but is in the early stages of recovery, according to the latest report analyzing Colorado Secretary of State data.

The Quarterly Business & Economic Indicators Report also showed that employment growth is projected to continue but at sa lower pace in the first half of 2017.

And to few Coloradans' surprise, the report also notes enormous differences in growth persist between the urban and rural parts of the state.

EPA Determines it has Immunity from Gold King Mine Claims

January 13, 2017, the independent claims officer within the Environmental Protection Agency - guided by the U.S. Department of Justice - made a decision on the administrative claims brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) in connection with the Aug. 5, 2015 Gold King Mine release. After careful analysis, the claims officer concluded that the agency is not legally able to pay compensation for the claims.

IRS Free File Tax Software Now Available


The Internal Revenue Service and its private-sector partners announced the 2017 opening of Free File, the free tax software preparation program that gives eligible taxpayers a dozen options for brand-name products.

Taxpayers can get a jump now on preparing their returns, and the companies will hold the returns until January 23 when the filing season officially begins. Taxpayers also should remember that, by law, the IRS must hold refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit until February 15.

Governor Issues Statement on EPA Decision to Avoid Gold King Mine Spill Claims

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper issued a brief statement on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision against reimbursing private businesses and individuals for claims of damages from the Gold King Mine spill:

"We are disappointed in the EPA's decision. We expected the EPA to make good on its promise to reimburse any Colorado resident or business that suffered a legitimate loss as a result of the spill. The Attorney General has agreed to help us find ways we can make sure our residents receive just compensation."
