Safe Kids urges parents and caregivers to check their homes for basic safety precautions, especially if you will be leaving them home alone over spring break.

Home Country

By Slim Randles

Janice Thomas came in the Mule Barn for breakfast the other day, and sat at the counter for the first time. She usually gets one of the tables, or a booth against the wall. We were kinda flattered that she’d come sit with us, but wondered why. After all, this high school art teacher never has been one to sit down and solve the world’s problems, the way we do.

She didn’t keep us waiting long, though.

“Boys,” she said, “I have a deer pointer.”

She let the silence pounce heavily on our sweet rolls while we pondered this.

“A what?” Doc said.

Photo of the Week

One of our most popular features from the past 15 years - a full-page color photo on the front of the Kiowa County Press showing various impressions of life in Kiowa County. While a limited number of copies continue to be printed and distributed each week at Kiowa Healthmart and the COOP C-Store in Eads, we wanted to bring this feature to our online readers as well.

Dry Conditions Expand in Southeast Colorado

by Chris Sorensen

One year ago, most of southeast Colorado was experiencing moderate to severe drought. Summer rains, though not as abundant as some would like, eliminated drought conditions across most of the area by the end of September. Kiowa, Crowley and Otero Counties remained in the “abnormally dry” category however.

By the end of February, only a small portion of western Kiowa County was considered abnormally dry.
