United States Highlights
Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 4.06 billion pounds in February, up 3 percent from the 3.94 billion pounds produced in February 2017.
Beef production, at 1.98 billion pounds, was 3 percent above the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.42 million head, up 2 percent from February 2017. The average live weight was up 8 pounds from the previous year, at 1,368 pounds.

Colorado Cattle on Feed – February 2018 Statistics
The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 950,000 head as of March 1, 2018. The latest inventory was 1 percent below last month’s inventory, but up 4 percent from the March 1, 2017 inventory. Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 170,000 head of fed cattle during February 2018. This was 8 percent below the previous month’s marketings, but 3 percent above marketings one year earlier.

Wildfires in Colorado – whether in mountain areas or the open plains – often lead to evacuations. Fire danger has frequently been high in the state due to dry conditions and drought through much of the winter. Drought has become extreme in several areas of the state, further increasing the risk.

Extreme drought expanded into south central Colorado and spread further in the southwest part of the state over the past week.
