The Internal Revenue Service today encouraged taxpayers to consider a mid-year tax withholding checkup following several new factors that could affect their refunds in 2017.  Taking a closer look at the taxes being withheld can help ensure the right amount is withheld, either for tax refund purposes or to avoid an unexpected tax bill next year.

Colorado Adults Remain Leanest in the Nation

Colorado remained the leanest state in the nation in 2015, with a 20.2 percent adult obesity rate, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Colorado’s obesity rate increased dramatically from 2000 through 2010 but since then has leveled off. Nevertheless, one in five Colorado adults is obese, and obesity rates are higher for African-American (27.7 percent) and Hispanic (28.3 percent) Coloradans.

Elbert County SWAT Called When Man Points Gun at Deputies

Elbert County deputies were dispatched shortly after 1:00 a.m. Saturday to a reported drunk driver who was southbound on Elbert County Road 21.

Based on registration information, deputies were led to an address on Dove Creek Drive in Elizabeth where they contacted the alleged driver, James Littrell, 59.

Littrell disobeyed verbal orders and pointed a handgun at deputies before running into a home.

Elbert and Douglas County officers were able to establish a perimeter around the home and requested the Elbert County S.W.A.T team.

Human Remains Found in Kit Carson County

Human remains were found Thursday south of Vona in Kit Carson County.

The Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office closed County Road 23 between County Roads R and N Thursday morning. It was re-opened about 11 hours later.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the County Coroner’s Office, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and Stratton Marshall’s Office to identify the remains.

According to a statement from Sheriff Tom Ridnour, the investigation is ongoing and no further details are available.
