  • USDA  Rod Johnson: American Agriculture Stand Tall! The tragedy of September 11 has reach to every corner of the earth and virtually everyone has  some direct connection to the atrocity. FSA has been notified that John Ogonowski, an FSA County Committee member for 16 years in Massachusetts, was a pilot on one of the American Airlines Flights that struck the American Trade Center .

 

  • Some people were talking at the elevator and said “Tommy Liesen is the oldest man (85) they know of in our area who still drives his own combine, trucks, and tractor. Congratulations, Tommy and son, Gary, who won Grand Champion on their Milo at the Kiowa County Fair.

 

  • Pueblo paper reported that of the 249 schools listed in southeastern Colorado that only 10 were ranked “Excellent” and two of those were Eads Elementary and Eads Middle School.

  • Sheriff sues Kiowa County Commissioners for a month’s salary that was denied him in December 1988.

 

  • Burl and Catherine Scherler were recently certified as tree farmers under the American tree farm system.

September 17, 1976

 

  • Kiowa County cattlemen Tuesday elected Narvey Larrew chairman of the county’s Beef Development Task Force, a group dedicated to passage of a cattleman’s referendum, probably in March, which would pay for a massive public relations, advertising and marketing program for beef.

 

  • More than 150 people attended the Old-Timers Reunion at the Courthouse meeting room Friday after the rodeo.

 

  • Eads Tuesday Night Ladies High Individual Game –Ellen Simmons 221 and Evelyn Garner 205; High Individual Series Ellen Simmons 567

September 16, 1966

 

  • Herman Mays of Eads landed two nice catfish Sunday evening from the Upper Queen Lake. Herman says he makes a catch about every trip there. This time he landed one that weighted about 2.25 lbs and 20 inches. The other was just under 2 lbs.

 

  • Two Kiowa County 4-H member won trophies at the Bent Wranglers 4-H Gymkhana at Las Animas. Gail Voss of Haswell won all-around senior cowgirl trophy and Kathy Stoker Haswell tied with Debbie Ellison and Diana Kerr for all-around junior cowgirl trophy.

September 5, 1941

 

  • Sam Castleman sent word to the Press we should announce for him that the boy who left his flashlight in his watermelon patch, will be entitled to it when identified. Indications are that he left in a hurry because the light was still burning when found that night!

September 15 1916

 

  • George Messick received very serious injuries while building a fence Tuesday afternoon. The wire broke, one end striking Mr. Messick in the face and will probably result in losing of one of his eyes.
