  • USDA UPDATE: Hot dry weather is affecting the springs crops. Grain sorghum & corn seems  stress the most, while millet & Sunflowers seem to be in a little better condition. Additional rains need soon to avoid a repeat of disastrous 2000 crop year.

 

  • East End Events: Monte & Linda Stum & family have taken on quite a construction project in adding a second story on their home in Towner. Wednesday they lifted the roof off the house with a crane, put up the new story walls then set the roof back on the house. It was an interesting sight, and not surprising, was the main attraction in Towner for a couple of days this week.

  • Rain the main topic 25 years ago. Arlington 2 ½ inches; Haswell 3 inches;  west of Sheridan Lake 1.60 inches; Towner .75 to 5.25 inches; around  9 miles south of Towner had up to 7 inches; Kit Carson 2.5 inches

 

  • Eads Museum Needs: 40 visitors a day

  • A cooperative permanent television board involving Cheyenne and Kiowa Counties will be established as a result of action taken in a joint meeting of the commissioners from the two counties last Thursday.

 

  • The Kiowa County invitational 4-H Dog Show will be held at the Eads High School football field, Saturday August1, at 7pm.

 

 

  • “We need to recruit doctors who aren’t out to make a fortune in medicine,” said Dr. S.  Jack Locke of his proposed Southeast Colorado Health Care Association (SECHCA) during a press conference at his Lamar office last week.

August 5, 1966

 

  • Oil exploration in Kiowa County was given another Boost this week as two of the three holes in progress produce oil shows at about the 4000 foot level-from the Marmaton: limestone.

 

  • Mike Lening played first base in All Star Babe Ruth baseball game in Holyoke. He was chosen from the team Plainview in the Kiowa-Cheyenne League.

 

 

  • Eads Little League coach by Robert Woods won the Wiley tournament. Eads down Wiley #2 with a10-6 win in the in the first game. Tommy Richards had 3 hits, including a double and triple. Kenny Lindholm hit a pair of doubles and Artie Cunningham had the other 2 Eads hits. In the 2nd game against Wiley #1 they open the game in the 5th with 7 runs to take a 11-2 win. Tommy Richards pitched a 1 hitter and garnered 3 hits. Jerry Frederick had a double and Kenny Lindholm a triple. In the champion contest the opposing pitchers each gave up one hit but Eads took advantage of wildness in the 1st  for 2 runs and used their lone hit, a triple by Tommy Richards for two my runs in the 5th for a 4-0 victory over Holly. Kenny Lindholm was the Eads pitcher, striking out 12 and walking one. Holly only hit by Dale Randle was a single but was erased when he tried to steal second.
