Ten-Day Winter Blitz DUI Enforcement Underway

Colorado law enforcement agencies will be boosting DUI enforcement for the end of January with increased officers on duty and saturation patrols starting Friday. For 10 days, 119 law enforcement agencies statewide will dedicate additional resources to apprehending drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or other drugs.

Flags Lowered Monday to Honor Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper ordered flags lowered to half-staff statewide on all public buildings from sunrise to sunset Monday, January 22, in honor of Sergeant First Class Mihail Golin.  

Golin, 34, died in the line of duty January 1, of injuries sustained from small arms fire while on dismounted patrol in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Golin was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.

He is survived by his parents and daughter.

Colorado is Home to First U.S.-Bred Certified Hemp Seed

In the race to develop a successful, viable hemp industry, Colorado is now home to the first U.S.-bred hemp seed to qualify as Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) certified seed.  “This is an exciting time for the industrial hemp industry.  It seems breeding, technology, and information advances are happening at the speed of light; this is a giant step for American hemp farmers,” said Duane Sinning, CDA’s Division of Plant Industry Assistant Director.

Winter Tree Watering Necessary During Drought Conditions

Despite a relatively small amount of precipitation falling recently, the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor map indicates that nearly all of Colorado is currently experiencing some level of drought. Trees in urban and community settings throughout this region are dormant now, but still require occasional watering during dry winters to remain in top health.

US Marshal Killed Serving Warrant on Fugitive

A Deputy United States Marshall was killed Friday while serving an arrest warrant on a fugitive in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

According to the United States Marshals Service, Deputy US Marshal Christopher David Hill, 45, and two other officers were shot while attempting to arrest Shayla Lynette Towles Pierce at a home in Harrisburg. An unidentified man at the home began shooting at officers, who returned fire and killed the man.

Deputy Hill was taken to a local hospital where he died. The other officers had non-life-threatening injuries and were treated.
