Hurricane Irma, which formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean last week, continued to gain strength as it continues on a path that currently takes it towards the continental United States.
The storm reached Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale Monday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. Irma is moving west at 13 mph. The storm is expected to remain on a westerly path into Tuesday before turning slightly toward the northwest later in the day.
Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of NASA’s Voyager 1 space probe. A companion spacecraft, Voyager 2, had launched a few weeks earlier on August 20, 1977.
At around 13 billion miles away, Voyager 1 has traveled the furthest distance from Earth for a human-created object. Voyager 2 has a record of its own – the longest continuously operating spacecraft.
If you live in or are traveling through Colorado, you may have noticed smoke in the air Sunday, which became even heavier Monday.
Fires burning in the Pacific Northwest and Montana are producing huge volumes of smoke that is being pulled into Colorado, particularly the eastern half of the state. Neighboring Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas are also being blanketed with smoke that is giving the sky an orange tint.
