The Centennial Farms program honors working farms and ranches that have been in the same family for 100 years or more. Centennial Farms are honored at the Colorado State Fair every August. Jobs Available Through Career Expo

Lamar Community College’s annual Career Expo will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 9:00am until noon in the LCC Wellness Center.  The Career Expo serves as part career exploration, part career fair for the community.  Lamar Community College students and community members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Nearly 50 businesses have confirmed their spaces at the Career Expo, with several promising current career openings that expo-goers can learn about and apply for.

Trauma Specialist to Address Students about Choices

Lori Morgan, a trauma prevention specialist from UCHealth Memorial Hospital, will be visiting Eads High School for a presentation to teens that will center on making smart choices.  

Specifically, students at Eads High School will learn how the choices they make while driving could impact not only their own life, but the lives of their family members, friends and the entire community.

The program, titled, “Trauma Talks Tough,” will be held at the school this Thursday, April 7; at 1:15 p.m. Approximately 50 students are expected to attend the session.

Lesser Prairie-Chicken Population Improves in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife shares in the success reported March 31, 2016 by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA), on the status of the lesser prairie chicken. This report is the second since the implementation of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Range-wide Conservation Plan in 2014.

“The lesser prairie-chicken range-wide plan, because it’s incentive based and voluntary, is the new model for conservation and the best alternative to listing species,” said Bob Broscheid, CPW director and Colorado’s representative to the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Council.

High Fire Danger Tuesday Across Southern Colorado

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday (April 5, 2016) from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. for much of southern Colorado including Kiowa County to due high fire danger. The warning replaces the Fire Weather Watch that was previously in effect.

In addition to Kiowa County, all or large portions of Fremont, El Paso, Pueblo, Huerfano, Las Animas, Crowley, Otero, Bent, Prowers and Baca Counties are under the warning. The San Luis Valley and neighboring counties in Oklahoma and New Mexico are also included.
