Weather Outlook – the Week Ahead: Warm Days, Frosty Nights

By Chris Sorensen

Unseasonably warm days are expected to continue this week, however clear nights will allow temperatures to drop near or below freezing.

Portions of southeast Colorado received rain overnight Saturday, however amounts are unlikely be enough to break drought conditions that strengthened significantly over the past week.

Sunday’s high will be in the mid-60s, with the low falling to near 40. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast, however less than one-tenth inch of rain is expected.

“All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin …” so goes the famous hymn we once learned in Sunday school and didn’t figure out what it meant for another 20 years or so.

But now is the time of harvest. Now is the gathering in. The crops are gathered in. Firewood for winter storms is gathered in. Fruit from the orchards is gathered in. This year’s crop of spring calves is gathered in.

Report Sheds Light on Seniors Needs

Colorado's senior population is growing at a rapid pace. It is estimated that the number of Coloradans over the age of 65 will reach roughly 1.2 million by 2030, up from 555,000 in 2010. Along with the 120 percent increase in our senior population, it is expected that Colorado seniors will live longer and require more economic resources to afford the services and care they need to age in place.

Photo of the Week

One of our most popular features from the past 15 years - a full-page color photo on the front of the Kiowa County Press showing various impressions of life in Kiowa County. While a limited number of copies continue to be printed and distributed each week at Kiowa Healthmart, COOP C-Store in Eads, Haswell Propane, and Thunderbird Petroleum, we wanted to bring this feature to our online readers as well.
