2016 Colorado Wildfires Highlight Need to Use Local Wood

The large and destructive wildfires in Colorado this year, from the 38,000-acre Beaver Creek Fire still burning in beetle-kill timber in northwestern Colorado to the 16,000-acre Hayden Pass Fire southeast of Salida, are in part due to unhealthy forest conditions that made them prone to intense fire behavior. And with this week being National Forest Products Week, the Colorado State Forest Service wants to emphasize how having a robust wood products industry spurs not only widespread forest management, but the healthy forests and reduced wildfire risk that result from them.

RIP to DUI: Halloween Impaired Driving Enforcement Underway

Now through Tuesday, November 1, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and law enforcement agencies throughout the state will increase their DUI enforcement as part of CDOT’s The Heat Is On campaign, aiming to eliminate drunk driving related injuries and fatalities this Halloween. In all, 100 law enforcement agencies will participate in the crack down.

The Regular Kiowa County Commissioner’s Meeting was called to order by Chairman, Richard Scott on September 29, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Commissioner Richard Scott opened the meeting with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Those in Attendance:

Fall Tips to Prepare Trees for Winter

Trees in urban and community settings throughout Colorado are going dormant, and they require care before and during the winter to remain in top health. Homeowners can take measures now and through spring to help their trees through the oncoming harsh conditions, says Keith Wood, community forestry program manager for the Colorado State Forest Service.

Kiowa County Hospital District Official Minutes - September 27, 2016

The Kiowa County Hospital District and County Board met in regular session on September 27, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bank Meeting Room.

District Board members present were: Robert Woods, Priscilla Waggoner, Mary Eikner, Sylvia Shields and Cathryn Anderson.

County Board members present were: Kim Harris, John Negley, Craig Kerfoot and Dennis Pearson. Absent: Lori Shalberg (called)
