Our pal Doc is a genius.
Just take the other day, and all of us were gathered up and coffee’d at the Mule Barn truck stop coffee shop and world dilemma think tank, and ol’ Doc just proved it again.
Steve noticed them first, the young couple who had just pulled into a parking space outside the “efaC” window. From the outside, it reads “Café.”
“Say,” said Steve, “isn’t that Bobby and Carol Ann?”
“Yep,” said Jimmy, “and if I ain’t mistaken, there’s three of ‘em today.”
Nearly one-third of Colorado remains within the two worst categories of drought as portions of the southwest corner shift from extreme to exceptional drought.
Exceptional drought, the worst category, has been impacting all of Montezuma, much of La Plata and portions of Dolores and Archuleta counties since April. With the latest update, the remainder of Dolores county moved to exceptional, along with much of San Miguel and parts of San Juan and Montrose counties.
A study by Colorado State University researchers has revealed that the amount of time snow remains on the ground can be used to determine annual streamflow patterns.
In the past, snow accumulation has been used to predict streamflows, however taking accurate measurements is difficult in mountain areas.
Interventions can be the difference between life and death for a drug addict or an alcoholic. Not every person in need of rehabilitation readily accepts the opportunity to get clean and handle the issues that drove them to addiction. While some addicts or alcoholics have been so badly beaten and battered by their lifestyle that they grasp at the first opportunity to deal with their problems, others need an external influence and viewpoint in order to seek help.
The Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s Field Institute is offering an course titled “Orienteering for Beginners: Map & Compass Basics in RMNP”, which will be held May 19.
The half day course is designed for the recreational hiker who has little or no experience reading a topographic map or working with a compass. Participants will learn to read contour lines, recognize landforms, calculate percent and angle of slope, become familiar with compass components, compass bearings, correcting for magnetic declination, and more.
