Despite the calendar showing winter in Colorado, high fire danger returns to the southeast plains of the state Sunday.
An anonymous tip prompted a poaching investigation by Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers that ended in the arrest and conviction of two Colorado Springs men for wildlife crimes.
February 8, 2018, in Fourth Judicial District Court, Yevgeniy Bikrev, 33, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of illegal possession of wildlife, hunting on private property without permission and hunting out of season. He was fined $2,259 by Judge Christopher Acker.

The first week in February, I was fortunate to attend the Western 4-H Institute. While there, I participated in an activity that really got me thinking. Our presenters laid out paper masks and asked us to write down all of the projects that we participated in during our own 4-H careers or program areas that we are putting together as agents. I quickly wrote down the spattering of projects I participated in as a kid without thinking twice. After we shared with those around us, we were then handed a clear piece of film that was shaped just like the mask.

Influenza A (H3N2) viruses have been most common this season. H3N2-predominant seasons have tended to be more severe. However, other flu viruses are circulating too, contributing to serious illnesses. This season, the highest hospitalization rates have been in people 65 years and older, followed by people 50-64 years, then children 0-4 years of age. About 90% of influenza A-related hospitalizations in people 65 and older have been associated with H3N2 virus infections. About 20% of influenza A-related hospitalizations in people 50-64 have been associated with H1N1 virus infections.
The third Monday in February is a holiday, at least for Federal government employees, though some people may be confused about the actual name of the holiday.
Looking at many calendars, including the electronic kind found on computers and tablets, one could be forgiven for thinking Monday’s holiday is called “Presidents’ Day” (with or without the apostrophe after the ‘s’). However, there is no Federally-recognized holiday with that name.
