First human cases of West Nile virus reported for 2018; take precautions to avoid bites

The first two human cases of West Nile virus in Colorado in 2018 have been reported in Weld and Delta counties. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reminds people that preventing mosquito bites is the No. 1 way to avoid getting any mosquito-borne illness.

Linda Lee Clark

December 2, 1931 - July 31, 2018

Linda L. Clark, a long-time resident of Yuma County, passed away in her home in Kirk on the afternoon of July 31, 2018 at the age of 86, with her family at her side.

Linda's father was a station agent for the Soo Line Railroad and Linda grew up in the Soo Line Depot in Henning, Minnesota. After high school, she received a lifetime teaching certificate from Bemidji State Teachers College.

Prowers Partners for Progress Launching Annual Car Show this Week

Prowers Partners for Progress, a non-profit organization, will be hosting what it hopes to be the first annual Downtown Custom & Classic Exposition in downtown Lamar August 17-18. The event will kick off Friday night at 6:00 p.m. with the opening of the Car Art at the DCCE exhibit at the Shore Arts Center at 115 South Main Street.

National Immunization Awareness Month: Put Vaccines on your Back-to-School List

As the school year approaches, we join with partners nationwide in recognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management reminds parents and guardians to check their children’s vaccination records. If your children need vaccines, make sure they are on your back-to-school list.  Following the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children from serious disease.

It began as a whispered threat, this latest storm of ours. There was something in the air, a cleansing tonic, a murmur of sharpness.

The trees on the hills looked different, then, seeming to stand out in sharper focus, in cleaner profile. It was the magical paintbrush of a gentle sun brushing the front of them, against an ominous, creeping black background. And the blackness grew higher yet, until the western sky was a massive wall of black and swirling gray.
