Eleanor Jones

(April 1, 1923 - May 2, 2017)

Antonia Eleanor Jones was born April 1, 1923, to immigrants Frank and Antonia Bratkovic in Kansas City, Kansas. She grew up in the Slovenian/Croatian community of Strawberry Hill and always loved the ethnic foods such as Kielbasa (sausage) and Povatica (a walnut bread), which her sister Marge still makes every year. She had two older brothers, Frank and Carl, both deceased, and a younger sister Margaret (Marge) who resides in Littleton, Colorado.

Each month, the Colorado Department of Agriculture features a different product to highlight the variety and quality of products grown, raised or processed in the state. Spring has sprung and tender greens are poking through the ground.  Colorado grows a wide variety of greens, both field and greenhouse, such as arugula, kale, collard and different types of lettuce. Romaine lettuce is sodium free, high in Vitamin A and a good source of folate. Look for Colorado greens at your local grocery store, farmers’ market or on the menu at restaurants across the state.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month.

There were 125 motorcycle fatalities in 2016—a 15 percent increase from the number of motorcycle fatalities in 2015 and a record all-time high for Colorado. Motorcycle deaths have been on the rise for the past few years, which is why CDOT will be launching a campaign during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to encourage riders to participate in motorcycle safety training courses offered across the state.

Arkansas River

Colorado recently received $7.8 million in federal funding to help combat opioid addiction. The funding is part of $485 million in grants announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
