Quilt Workshop Produces Fidget Quilts for Local Dementia/Alzheimer’s Patients

Before they passed away, both my grandfather and father had dementia. Although its onset probably came much sooner than our family recognized, my dad’s decline seemed so very swift. It was heart-wrenching to travel to the nursing home in Missouri to visit him and realize that he didn’t know me anymore. He seemed agitated as his hands fidgeted. If only I had known about fidget quilts at that time, I would have loved to create one to help soothe him. These quilts help patients feel more relaxed, thereby improving well-being. The different textures and shapes engage and stimulate the brain.

Kiowa County Commissioners Meeting Minutes – May 24, 2018

The Kiowa County Commissioner’s regular meeting was called to order at 09:00 a.m. on May 24, 2018 by Chairman Richard Scott. Oswald opened the meeting with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Oswald moved and McLoud seconded the motion to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried.

Interactive Map Update – Two More Colorado Counties Designated for Drought Disaster

As intense drought continues to plague southern and western Colorado, two more counties have received designations as primary natural disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture. 

This week, Elbert and El Paso counties were added to the list of designated counties. Primary counties now account for 33 of the state’s 64 counties. Ten more counties are eligible for assistance as neighboring counties.

Summer DUI Enforcement Underway

More fatal crashes happen on Colorado roads during the three months between Memorial Day and Labor Day than any other time of year. To keep drivers and passengers safe this summer, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), local law enforcement agencies and other safety partners are collaborating to implement several safety enforcement and outreach efforts across the state.

Colorado Unemployment Down Slightly in May

Employers in Colorado added 7,700 nonfarm payroll jobs from April to May for a total of 2,723,400 jobs, according to the survey of business establishments. Private sector payroll jobs increased 8,400 and government decreased by 700. April estimates were revised down to 2,715,700, and the over the month increase from March to April was 5,900 rather than the originally estimated 7,200.

Canyons & Plains Regional Meeting Set for Eads

Canyons & Plains of Southeast Colorado will be holding its regional meeting in Eads Thursday June 21at 10:00 a.m.  The presentation will be a walking tour to show how the community is making changes to the downtown area for the enjoyment of the residents and to attract new visitors. The gathering will start in front of the Crow Luther Cultural Events Center on Maine Street.
