A large crowd attended the Plainview Athletic and Awards program and the potluck supper on Tuesday evening.  Also, on Thursday, the Community BBQ and Elementary Awards program were well attended. School is out!! Hope everyone has a safe and happy summer.

Farmers Across America Endorse Rural Students for $528,000 in Scholarships

Across America 352 students have recently been awarded $1,500 scholarships from America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. The program encourages rural youth to remain in agriculture and provides post-high school scholarships to help them develop the skills needed to fill thousands of agriculture jobs in a variety of fields – including farming, agronomy, education, engineering, business management and many more. Farmers play a vital role in the program by promoting the opportunity to local students and endorsing their applications.

U.S. Grain Elevators Facing A Host Of Challenges In New Crop Year

Low volatility, ample inventories and other factors combining to pressure profit margins for grain merchandisers

U.S. grain merchandisers are beginning the new-crop growing season facing significant challenges, according to a new research report by CoBank. Low price volatility, ample grain and oilseed inventories, slow farmer selling and an anemic export program suggest elevators are in for a difficult 2016-2017 season.

COLORADO

The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger

was estimated at 900,000 head as of May 1, 2016. The latest inventory represents no change from last month or from the

May 1, 2015 inventory. Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 135,000 head of fed cattle

during April 2016. This was 10 percent below the previous month’s marketings, but 13 percent above the marketings one

Specht, Brase Honored as LCC Alumni of the Year

Dale Specht and Lawrence Brase were selected as the 2016 Lamar Community College Outstanding Alumni of the Year.  They were honored LCC’s Annual Antelope Night held on May 6.

President John Marrin introduced Brase and Specht, remarking on their personal successes since their time at LCC as well as their continued support of the college and all of Southeast Colorado.

“Both are outstanding representations of what LCC students can become,” remarked President Marrin.

Preparing a disaster recovery plan makes good business sense

One of this region’s most expensive disasters unfolded the night of Sept. 9, 2013 when over 10 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period, devastating Boulder, Colo. and several other communities with flash floods, inflicting damage on nearly 20,000 homes and hundreds of small businesses.  Unfortunately, our region is prone to a variety of natural disasters such as flooding in North Dakota, tornadoes in South Dakota, and the 2012 Montana wildfires that scorched more than 1.1 million acres of land.

I was studying my card when the guys walked in for coffee.

“What did you get?” asked Doc.

“D-24.”

“Just one?”

“Yeah. The boys caught me when I was kinda short, so I only got the one this year.”

“They hit me for ten,” Doc said. “In E section.”

Dud looked at us. “I think E section’s a pretty good bet. Especially later in the afternoon. The sun will be over there then. Nice and warm. She’s liable to go there.”

Savanna Gyurman Awarded $500 Scholarship

Kiowa County Sheriff Casey Sheridan has announced that Savanna Gyurman is this year’s recipient of a $500 scholarship award. Funds were provided by the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC), an association of state sheriffs.

Recipients are selected by local citizen committees in Colorado counties. CSOC offered 31 scholarships for high school and college students to further their higher education pursuits in the 2016-17 academic year.
