Benefits of wind energy farms for rural Colorado

Wind energy farms have taken Colorado by storm. Where wide-open farmlands once stretched as far as the eye can see, wind turbines now pepper the landscape. Some consider the new view a wonder, as few have seen these massive modern-day windmills. Others aren’t so thrilled. What can’t be argued so easily, however, are the benefits that wind energy farms bring to rural Colorado.

Crash closes Highway 96 near Sheridan Lake

Update: The Kiowa County Sheriff's Office reports that one person has died following Saturday's crash. The identity of the person has not been released.

A crash Saturday morning closed Highway 96 east of Sheridan Lake in Kiowa County. The westbound lane was reopened shortly before 10:00 a.m. to alternating traffic. Kiowa County Sheriff Casey Sheridan reported that the highway was fully reopened around 10:40 a.m.

Ag statistics: August cattle on feed

COLORADO

The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 900,000 head as of September 1, 2018. The latest inventory was 1 percent above last month and 5 percent above the September 1, 2017 inventory.

Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 190,000 head of fed cattle during August 2018. This was 12 percent above last month’s marketings, but no change from the marketings one year earlier.

United States Highlights

  • Commercial red meat production for the United States totaled 4.77 billion pounds in August, up 3 percent from the 4.63 billion pounds produced in August 2017. 
  • Beef production, at 2.43 billion pounds, was 1 percent above the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.98 million head, up 1 percent from August 2017.

Food safety course offered for small producers

Colorado State University Extension is offering a three-hour course for small producers interested in bringing their home-made foods to market.

The class is offered by CSU Extension in Pueblo County and covers the food safety training required by Colorado’s Cottage Food Act.

Extension Agent Laura Krause will instruct the course November 16 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the CSU Extension office located at 701 Court Street, Suite C, in Pueblo.
