• State and local health department laboratories have started testing dead birds, mosquitoes and horses for West Nile Virus.
• Severe hail cut two wide swaths through the county. The hardest hit area is from north of Hwy 96 between Sheridan Lake and Towner and east of Hwy 385 south to the Prowers County line. The hailed covers approximately 220 square miles (140,000 acres).

FRIENDS?

Otero Junior College’s Non-Traditional Evening and Weekends (NEW) nursing program students held their pinning ceremony June 15 at OJC’s Ed Stafford Theater. The graduates have completed Associate of Applied Science degrees in nursing.

Artists throughout Colorado are busy preparing their artwork for the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition. The popular and prestigious part of the annual event showcases original artwork by Colorado residents. 

All artwork chosen for the exhibition will be on display in the Fine Arts Building during the entire length of the Fair. Two divisions for artwork submission are being offered: Emerging Artist and Professional. 

Because so many kids today are over-scheduled, over-screened and over-protected – and spending as little as 4-7 minutes outside each day – the Generation Wild campaign is a movement to change this dynamic by inspiring kids (and moms) to get outside more often, letting their imaginations and curiosity run wild. 

Kiowa County 4-H Shooting Sports members prepare for the District 6 Shooting Sports Competition that was held June 9th in La Junta.  Kiowa County had 13 members participate in the 2nd annual event.  Clayton Nelson finished 1st-Jr. Recurve, Cade McDowell 3rd-Sr. Trap, Bradley Musgrave 2nd-Sr. Pistol, Brinden Williams 3rd-Sr. Pistol, and Hatch Nelson 3rd-Sr. .22 Open Sight.  

Summer is quickly approaching and the staff at the Kiowa County Public Library District is busy planning the 2018 Summer Reading Program, "Libraries Rock." 

We invite your children, ages 3-12, to join us for a rocking good time this summer. Early registration will be June 18 - July 9. Our jam sessions will be July 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, & 26 from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM.

We are also looking for dedicated roadies that can help our group managers. So if you, or anyone you know, has some free time and wants to jam with us this summer stop by or call the library for details.

Upper 90s will be replaced with low to mid-80s by Monday, with increasing chances of rain coming to the area just as an early wheat harvest gets underway in some parts of Kiowa County.

Saturday’s high will reach 90, accompanied by south wind in the 20 to 30 mile per hour range. Gusts to 40 mph are possible. Later in the day, tropical moisture and the remnants of Hurricane Bud begin to flow into the area, bringing a chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. A tenth to a quarter inch of rain is possible overnight as temperatures fall to the mid- to low 60s.
